Our Services

What is Pediatric Gastro-Intestinal Surgery?

Pediatric Gastro-Intestinal (GI) Surgery is a specialized branch of pediatric surgery that focuses on diagnosing and treating disorders of the stomach, intestines, pancreas, mesentery and abdominal wall in newborns, infants, and children.

Pediatric Gastro-Intestinal Surgery: Conditions Treated, Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

Our expertise covers a wide range of complex GI disorders in children, including:

  • Ano-rectal Malformations (ARM): Absent or abnormally placed anal opening causing difficulty in passing stool.
  • Hirschsprung’s Disease: Absence of nerve cells in the intestine leading to severe constipation or blockage of intestine.
  • Abdominal Cysts: Fluid-filled sacs that may become infected and may cause intestinal obstruction.
  • Intestinal Atresias: Blockage of the intestines (Duodenal, Jejunal, Ileal, or Colonic Atresia) present at birth.
  • Malrotation with or without Volvulus: Abnormal rotation of the intestines causing twisting and obstruction.
  • Meckel’s Diverticulum: A pouch in the small intestine that may bleed or cause obstruction.
  • Congenital Bands: Abnormal tissue bands that obstruct the intestines.
  • Pyloric Stenosis (Infantile Hypertrophic Pyloric Stenosis – IHPS): Narrowing of the stomach outlet leading to projectile vomiting which can lead to dehydration, electrolyte imbalance. Early detection and surgery is required to prevent these complications.
  • Patent Vitello-intestinal Duct (PVID): Persistence of embryonic duct causing discharge or infection at the umbilicus.
Causes
  • Birth Defects – Malformations during fetal development (atresias, ARM, PVID).
  • Genetic Factors – Some cases of Hirschsprung’s disease.
  • Acquired Disorders – Hypertrophy (enlargement) of muscles as in pyloric stenosis.
  • Cysts & Remnants of Fetal Life – Abdominal cysts, Meckel’s diverticulum.
Symptoms

Children may present with:

  • Failure to pass stool in newborns
  • Persistent constipation or abdominal swelling
  • Projectile vomiting (especially in pyloric stenosis)
  • Feeding difficulties or choking
  • Abdominal pain or distension
  • Blood in stool or vomiting blood
  • Umbilical discharge (seen in PVID)
