What is Neonatal Surgery?

Neonatal surgery focuses on diagnosing and treating surgical conditions of newborns, from birth till 28 days of life. These delicate procedures require highly specialized surgical skills, advanced technology, and a compassionate approach to support both the baby and the family in difficult times.

Common Conditions, Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

1. Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH)
  • Cause: Developmental defect in the diaphragm allowing abdominal organs to move into the chest.
  • Symptoms: Difficulty breathing, rapid breathing, bluish skin(cyanosis), scaphoid abdomen.
  • Treatment: Surgical repair after stabilizing the newborn baby.
2. Esophageal Atresia / Tracheoesophageal Fistula (EA/TEF)
  • Cause: Abnormal formation of the esophagus and windpipe during fetal development.
  • Symptoms: Drooling, coughing, choking during feeding, difficulty breathing, pneumonia.
  • Treatment: Surgical reconstruction of the esophagus and closure of the abnormal airway connection.
3. Gastroschisis & Omphalocele
  • Cause: Abdominal wall defect where intestines or organs develop outside the abdomen.
  • Symptoms: Visible organs outside the abdominal cavity at birth.
  • Treatment: Surgery to place organs back inside and close the abdominal wall; sometimes multiple surgeries needed.
4. Intestinal Atresias
  • Cause: Complete or partial blockage of the intestines, often due to improper fetal development.
  • Symptoms: Vomiting (sometimes green), distended abdomen, inability to pass stool.
  • Treatment: Surgical removal of the blocked segment and reconstruction/rejoining of healthy intestine.
5. Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC)
  • Cause: Inflammation and damage to the intestine, common in premature infants.
  • Symptoms: Distended belly, feeding intolerance, blood in stool, lethargy.
  • Treatment: IV Antibiotics, bowel rest (no enteral feeding), and surgery in selected cases.
6. Anorectal Malformations
  • Cause: Improper development of the anus and rectum during fetal life.
  • Symptoms: Absence or abnormal position/shape of anal opening, inability to pass stool, constipation.
  • Treatment: Surgical repair/reconstruction to achieve normal anatomy and function. In some cases multiple surgeries are needed.
7. Lung Malformations (e.g., CCAM, CLE, Sequestration)
  • Cause: Abnormal lung tissue formation during fetal development.
  • Symptoms: Breathing difficulty, recurrent lung infections.
  • Treatment: Surgical removal of the affected lung tissue.
8. Tumors in Newborns (e.g., Sacrococcygeal Teratoma)
  • Cause: Tumor development in the tailbone region, often detected before birth on ultrasound done during pregnancy.
  • Symptoms: Visible lump/swelling in lower back (gluteal region). These cases may require delivery by caesarean section.
  • Treatment: Surgical removal, long-term follow-up is required to monitor bladder/bowel continence.
9. Hernias in Newborns (Inguinal or Umbilical)
  • Cause: Failure of closure of deep inguinal ring or abdominal wall before birth.
  • Symptoms: Bulge in the groin or belly button region, often visible on crying, straining, or coughing.
  • Treatment: Surgical repair to prevent complications like strangulation. Some umbilical hernias resolve spontaneously as the child grows.
