What is Pediatric Minimally Invasive Surgery?

Pediatric minimally invasive surgery (MIS) uses specialized tools and small incisions to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions in infants, children, and adolescents. These techniques, including laparoscopy (abdominal surgery), thoracoscopy (chest surgery), and cystoscopy (urinary bladder/urethral surgery) are designed to reduce pain, shorten hospital stay, and speed-up recovery while ensuring excellent surgical outcomes.

Conditions Treated, with Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

1. Posterior Urethral Valve (PUV)
  • Cause: Developmental defect.
  • Symptoms: Weak urinary stream, dribbling of urine, straining or crying during urination, repeated UTIs, chronic kidney disease symptoms.
  • Treatment: Cystoscopic PUV ablation, long-term follow-up to monitor bladder/kidney function.
2. Appendicitis
  • Cause: Inflammation of the appendix, often due to blockage by stool, mucus, or infection.
  • Symptoms: Sudden onset abdominal pain (starting near the belly button and moving to the lower right side of abdomen), fever, nausea, vomiting.
  • Treatment: Laparoscopic appendectomy to remove the appendix through small incisions.
3. Gallstones (Cholelithiasis)
  • Cause: Hardened deposits in the gallbladder due to excess cholesterol, bile imbalance, or certain blood disorders.
  • Symptoms: Upper abdominal pain often after meals, nausea, vomiting, jaundice.
  • Treatment: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy to remove the gallbladder.
4. Hernias (Inguinal, Umbilical, or Diaphragmatic)
  • Cause: Birth/developmental defects.
  • Symptoms: Visible bulge, discomfort, or pain, especially when crying or straining.
  • Treatment: Minimally invasive surgery to repair the defect.
5. Intestinal Malrotation / Obstruction
  • Cause: Abnormal positioning of the intestines during fetal development or blockage from various causes.
  • Symptoms: Vomiting (often green), bloating, abdominal pain, inability to pass stool.
  • Treatment: Laparoscopic correction to untwist or remove blockage.
6. Spleen Disorders (Splenectomy)
  • Cause: Blood disorders, enlarged spleen, or spleen injury.
  • Symptoms: Fatigue, anemia, recurrent infections, abdominal discomfort/pain.
  • Treatment: Laparoscopic splenectomy to remove the spleen if needed.
7. Lung and Chest Conditions
  • Cause: Congenital malformations, infections, or tumors.
  • Symptoms: Difficulty breathing, recurrent lung infections, chest pain.
