What is Pediatric Urology
Pediatric urology focuses on diagnosing and treating urinary tract and genital problems in new born babies, children, and adolescents. Children’s bodies and needs are different from adults, so these conditions require expert care from specialists trained in pediatric surgery and pediatric urology.

Common Conditions, Causes, Symptoms & Treatment
Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
- Cause: Bacterial infection in the urinary tract; may be linked to poor hygiene, constipation, or urinary tract abnormalities (VUR, PUV, PUJO etc).
- Symptoms: Pain or burning during urination, frequent urination, fever, abdominal/flank pain, or foul-smelling urine.
- Treatment: Antibiotics, hydration, and surgical correction of underlying anatomical abnormalities to save kidneys from getting damaged.
Bedwetting (Nocturnal Enuresis)
- Cause: Abnormal bladder function, constipation, deep sleep patterns, genetics, or underlying medical issues.
- Symptoms: Involuntary urination during sleep beyond age of 6 years.
- Treatment: Bladder training, moisture alarms, behavioral changes and medication if needed.
Undescended Testes (Cryptorchidism)
- Cause: Failure of one or both testes to move into the scrotum before birth.
- Symptoms: Absence of one or both testes in scrotum leading to empty or smaller-than-expected scrotum.
- Treatment: Corrective surgery (orchiopexy) to bring testes in their normal location. Ideal age for this surgery is 6 months.
Hypospadias
- Cause: Urethral opening develops on the undersurface of the penis instead of its tip, often due to hormonal or genetic factors.
- Symptoms: Abnormally directed urinary stream, downward penile curve, abnormally located urinary opening.
- Treatment: Surgical correction to straighten the penis, and urethral reconstruction for acceptable functional and cosmetic outcome. These children may require multiple surgeries.
Vesicoureteral Reflux (VUR)
- Cause: Incompetent Vesicoureteric junction allowing urine to flow backward into the ureters/kidneys.
- Symptoms: Recurrent UTIs, fever, flank pain, chronic kidney disease.
- Treatment: Continuous antibiotic prophylaxis for low grade reflux with stable kidney function, surgery for high grade reflux or cases not responding to antibiotic prophylaxis.
Kidney Stones in Children
- Cause: Dehydration episodes, diet high in oxalate, or metabolic disorders.
- Symptoms: Blood in urine, severe flank or abdominal pain, nausea, frequent urination or urinary retention.
- Treatment: Optimal hydration, dietary changes, medications, or surgical removal if stones are large or causing blockage in urinary tract.
Bladder Control Problems (Neurogenic Bladder)
- Cause: Overactive bladder, delayed bladder maturity, or underline neurological disorders.
- Symptoms: Urgency, frequency, dribbling of urine, daytime wetting, urinary retention, accidents.
- Treatment: Bladder retraining, pelvic floor exercises, medications, treatment of underlying conditions including surgical correction.
Urogenital Abnormalities
(e.g. Hypospadias, Epispadias, Urogenital Sinus, Penoscrotal Web)
- Cause: Developmental defects.
- Symptoms: Visible differences in genital shape, size, or location.
- Treatment: Timely surgical correction, parental counseling and long term follow up to achieve optimal functional and cosmetic outcome.
Prenatal Urology Concerns
- Cause: Urinary tract abnormalities of fetus detected by ultrasound during pregnancy.
- Symptoms: Often symptomless before birth; postnatal issues depend on the specific surgical condition
- Treatment: Monitoring during pregnancy, immediate postnatal evaluation, and surgery if needed.
