What is Thoracic Surgery?
Thoracic surgery deals with diseases affecting the organs inside the chest (thorax). These include the lungs, esophagus (food pipe), trachea (windpipe), diaphragm, chest wall, and mediastinum (the space between the lungs that contains the heart, major blood vessels, thymus, and lymph nodes).
Thoracic Surgery: Conditions Treated, Causes, Symptoms & Treatment
Our team specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of thoracic conditions, including:
- Tracheo-esophageal Fistula (TEF): An abnormal connection between the trachea (windpipe) and esophagus, usually present from birth, causing feeding and breathing difficulties.
- Congenital Lung Malformations: Abnormal development of lung tissue in newborns or children, such as CPAM (Congenital Pulmonary Airway Malformation), CLE (Congenital Lobar Emphysema), etc.
- Bronchogenic / Foregut Duplication Cysts: Rare congenital cysts in the lungs or mediastinum that may cause breathing or swallowing issues. Nowadays many such lesions are diagnosed antenatally.
- Mediastinal and Lung Tumors: Benign or malignant growths in the lungs or mediastinum (thymomas, lymphomas, neurogenic tumors, lung cancer).
- Stricture Esophagus: Narrowing of the esophagus, often due to injury, acid reflux, or congenital causes, leading to swallowing difficulty.
- Chest Wall Lesions: Tumors, deformities, or infections affecting the chest wall and ribs.
- Hydatid Disease of Lung: A parasitic infection (caused by Echinococcus) forming cysts in the lungs.
- Empyema Thoracis: Collection of pus in the chest cavity due to severe lung infections or pneumonia.
Causes
- Congenital (Birth Defects): TEF, congenital lung malformations, duplication cysts.
- Infections: Tuberculosis, pneumonia, parasitic infections (hydatid disease).
- Lifestyle & Environmental Factors: Smoking, pollution, and occupational exposure leading to lung cancer and esophageal stricture.
- Trauma: Chest injuries causing lung or chest wall problems.
- Chronic Illnesses: GERD (acid reflux), repeated infections, or immune disorders.
Symptoms
The symptoms vary depending on the condition but may include:
- Persistent cough or recurrent chest infections
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- Feeding difficulties in infants (in TEF or strictures)
- Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
- Chest pain or tightness
- Coughing up blood (hemoptysis)
- Unexplained weight loss or fatigue
- Visible chest wall swelling or deformity
